Antique collectors will love Plumas County for its abundance and variety of quaint shops. You can make a day of shopping by following an antique trail, or stroll Main Streets which offer treasure hunting opportunities in each community.
You'll find items ranging from the 1850s through the 1950s at these stores, many of which are housed in historic buildings or located amid stunning forest scenery.
Some specialize in furniture or home furnishings, while others combine antiques with Americana, gifts, and secondhand treasures. Antique buffs also can expect to find books, primitives, model trains and logging and mining equipment that reflect Plumas County's earliest industries.
The Eastern Plumas area offers an opportunity to follow the historic Beckwourth Trail (Highway 70) while taking in nearly a dozen stores located in the towns of Vinton, Beckwourth, Portola, Blairsden and Graeagle.
Surround yourself in nostalgia by browsing in unique buildings that were once one-room schoolhouses, millworkers' quarters or family homes. By adding a few towns in neighboring Sierra County, collectors can make a loop tour combining great antiquing with a beautiful scenic drive. Contact the Eastern Plumas County Chamber of Commerce (800) 995-6057 for a free map and guide to these stores.
In addition, antique lovers should make plans to attend a three-day Antiques Show and Sale held each year over Labor Day weekend in Graeagle.
Continuing west to the town of Quincy, collectors will find a number of stores both along Highway 70 in East Quincy and in Quincy's historic downtown along Main Street. Items such as handcrafted furniture, glassware, pottery, dolls, jewelry, collectibles, Native American objects, home furnishings, artwork, vintage clothing and period quilts can be found in the small shops that reflect each owner's personalities and tastes.
The Indian Valley area offers stores in both Crescent Mills and on Main Street in Greenville, where shoppers also can enjoy a refreshment while browsing in a building that once housed a saloon. Contact the Indian Valley Chamber of Commerce (530) 284-6633 for a free map and guide to these stores.
The town of Chester also has a Main Street worth exploring for antiques, including home furnishings, furniture, glass, pottery and collectibles, combined with stationery and crafts supplies and gifts.
Store hours and days of opening vary, and some have limited hours during winter. It's best to call first; a list of stores is available at the Plumas County Visitors Bureau (800) 326-2247.
